Toyo Institute of Art & Design, founded in 1946, welcomes students from around the world. Students from around 15 countries — including government-sponsored (MEXT) scholarship students — currently study here.

Departments

Capacity: 30 international students (all departments combined).

  • Advanced Diploma in Creative Design — 4 years
    (Communication Design / Graphic Art / Product Design)
  • Diploma in Graphic Design — 2 years (Graphic Designer / Web Designer)
  • Diploma in Industrial Design — 2 years (Industrial Designer / Craft Furniture)
  • Diploma in Illustration — 2 years (Comic Illustration / Illustrator)
  • Diploma in Manga — 2 years
  • Advanced Diploma in Conservation and Restoration — 4 years
  • Diploma in Painting — 2 years

Transfer admission to the 3rd year is available for the Creative Design and the Conservation & Restoration programs.

At a Glance

  • Enrollment: April | Applications open: September 1 (closes when full)
  • Japanese level: JLPT N2 or above, or EJU Japanese 200+
  • Location: 2-6 Tomihisa-cho, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo (Akebonobashi Station)

Eligibility

Applicants must meet at least one condition in both A and B.

  • A) e.g. completion of 12 years of schooling abroad (or an equivalent qualification / recognized preparatory course), or IB, Abitur, Baccalauréat, or GCE A-Level.
  • B) JLPT N2 or above, or EJU Japanese (listening / reading total) 200 or above.

Support for International Students

  • Entrance examination fee waived
  • Tuition reduction of ¥200,000 per year from the 2nd year (school’s own program, by selection)
  • Monthly scholarship of ¥10,000 from the second half of the 1st year (for privately-financed students with 90%+ attendance and good grades)

How to Apply

  1. Apply from September 1
  2. Document screening & interview (on-site or online for overseas applicants)
  3. Result notification
  4. Enrollment procedure
  5. (Overseas applicants) The school applies for your Certificate of Eligibility (COE); you then obtain a student visa at a Japanese embassy / consulate
  6. Enrollment in April
